Master of Social Justice

Location: Online

Understanding refugees through a social justice perspective: pawns or political agents? We have all seen media representations of refugees fleeing their home countries because of conflict, repression or deprivation. As much as we might care about helping these populations, the protection of refugees is a hotly debated issue. Understanding refugee issues through at least three lenses -- human rights, peace and conflict, and development -- is important if we want to respond usefully. In this talk, you’ll learn about what makes a refugee, and whether we should consider them pawns or political agents. You’ll have a chance to see the ways they act with courage and conviction, and the art they produce. What implications does this have for refugees, and for social justice more broadly?

Should the international community reform the procedures for Investor-State Dispute Settlement

Location: Online

Historically, disputes between States concerning the treatment of their nationals abroad (usually nationals who had made investments in the territory of the other State) were settled by gunboat diplomacy, and then, with the creation of international institutions, States would present claims on behalf of their nationals under the doctrine of diplomatic protection. But since the latter part of the 20th century, investors have had the ability to submit claims directly against States under bilateral investment treaties, which typically provide for the establishment of an ad hoc arbitral tribunal. But is this the most appropriate method for the settlement of investor-State disputes? Join Professor Chester Brown, Professor of International Law and International Arbitration, as he discusses the topic: ‘Should the international community reform the procedures for Investor-State Dispute Settlement, and if so, how?
